Since I was a little boy I had a great fascination for the Western theme, because from 7 to 14 years old in the 50s/60s I lived in a city in the interior of São Paulo called at the time: Alfredo de Castilho (today only Castilho) which was really a citadel similar to the Old West, I watched the sweaty, tired, bearded cowboys who drove huge herds (out of town), then rode down the dirt main street kicking up dust, (or mud depending on the season) dismounting and tying their sweaty horses to rough poles of wood and entering warehouses, to drink or eat something - then they would leave, assemble again and leave - such images, expressions and gestures were imprinted in my memory forever (so much so that many years later, they were and are still used today, in my books and graphic novel of western - GRINGO).

"He is mestizo, the son of a Swedish mother and a Mexican father, and fought for the Yankees in the American Civil War.
He is GRINGO, created by author/comic book writer Wilson Vieira and artist Aloísio Castro.
But don't expect to find in GRINGO - THE CHOSEN, a western hero protagonist.
Here the characters are dirty and of dubious morals, like Sergio Leone's films.
Highlight for the narrative, which extrapolates the comics on each page."
By Télio Navega

CORMAC McCARTHY + SERGIO LEONE + WILSON VIEIRA = GRINGO WESTERN LITERARY TETRALOGY!!

GRINGO - Here the characters are of dubious morals, as in Sergio Leone's most realistic western films, and the line that separates good from bad is thin and dusty.
Moving away from the rules of the classic and repetitive western, imprinted in the collective memory, Leone magnificently transfigures the genre by giving it a typically Latin "strong baroque coloring" and much more credible in every sense, thinking of that period of American history.
So all in all, as a historian, this realistic view of the Western is perfect for how I see it…
Wilson Vieira

In addition to his work at Sergio Bonelli Editore, Wilson Vieira is a historian about the Wild West, and challenges the dramas and the exaggerated and romanticized heroism in which this period is commonly portrayed.
Denying both the barbaric aspect and the civilizing mission, because his criticisms cannot be radicalized in objectivity, between Legend and Reality about the American Old West and its characters, Wilson Vieira does not present us with the classic and idealized hero of the Literary Western that he is normally respectful of women, courteous to the humble and, above all, a winner.
NO THE MESTIZO!!
Because he is...GRINGO...

GRINGO - Out of the ashes of a civil war a man carries with him the marks of a bloody past.
Death rejected him, but it can still take him along, at any time.
Son of a Mexican and a Swedish, a peasant comes back from the hideous American Civil War after four years.
Willing to forget his past and not believing in the future, he becomes a lonely mestizo, a wandering horseman - his only goal is to survive the challenges of the present.
GRINGO is the very image of the Old West post-war man.
Without counting on superpowers he tries to overcome violence, hatred and vengeance.
GRINGO, during his adventures, recollects the terrible battles in which he fought during the conflict that split the Country and killed thousands of men like him.
Follow GRINGO while he is still alive...
GRINGO - It's the new character of the American Old West.
Entirely Brazilian, conceived and written by a national artist: Wilson Vieira.
Here begins a realistically described adventure, in a savage age, where the law was simply an insignificant word and in the brute land, where the gun was the only possible justice.
Accompany GRINGO on his lonely ride through this hostile environment.
GRINGO is an unpublished proposal in Western books.
Set in a destroyed country, stripped of all traditional values and its famous "American way of life", from the perspective of a Unionist officer, a survivor of the notorious and bloody American Civil War.
GRINGO is a fast-paced, vibrant read, packed with action from start to finish.
The idealized hero of the Wild West in books is usually always respectful with women, courteous with the humble, skillful and prepared to fight his enemies, always respecting the rules of a fair game and, above all, he is a winner.
NO GRINGO!!
He is absolutely not that stereotypical type of character.
The bizarre hairy half-breed is just an ordinary man, with no future, a typical product of war and now he is very violent, with nothing left to lose, only to gain.
In the present, at any time, somewhere, riding through the Old Wild West, his death is expected, in a harsh period where heroism never existed.
Get to know him better from these 4 books and begin to unveil his true and complex personality...arriba the mestizo...GRINGO in Western Literary Tetralogy!!

And here are the words referring to the article about the Wild West Alphabet:
The irreproachable and gigantic work of Wilson Vieira practically delivering a large book with entries explaining and referencing all the terms related to the old west, in ALFABETO DO VELHO OESTE, one of the sections of the TEX WILLER BLOG.
It was a work of around two years, posting, with each update, letter by letter, the entries.
It deserved to become a book.
